Today I went for a ride in the machine that moves the “zipper” on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge! Jerry from the Caltrans Maintenance Bridge Crew drives the Barrier Transfer Machine back and forth across the bridge twice a day — arguably one of THE best jobs on the planet.
One of my favorite parts was zooming in on the Port activities, all recon-style. Second favorite was watching Jerry wave back to the people waving at him from their vehicles. Just hope they weren’t too freaked out by the paparazzi sitting next to him…

Thank you SO much for sharing this Stacy Marie. I am very jealous
I have lived in Coronado for over 10 years and Jerry makes me smile every time he waves at me passing him and the zipper machine by. It always makes my day a little brighter.
I didn’t know his name before now, so thanks for letting me and the rest of those who wave back at him know.
The photos are great. What an amazing experience you had ~ too much fun!
You’re very welcome! And I’ll let Jerry know you said hello.
I’m sure you’ll also enjoy these photos by Don Hill of the South Coronado Photo Company, who was also on board the zipper machine.

Stacymarie,
Great blog post and pictures to boot! I love the shots and your comments. Would you be able to post this on eCoronado.com – folks would love to read about it. Also, if I wanted to interview a ‘zipper driver’, who would I contact?
Thanks again,
Steve
