SpongeDog SunPants

I took my first trip to Hawaii when I was 14. Like many family vacations to the tropical island, we spent the first several days of the trip basking in the sun, snorkeling and hiking to see majestic waterfalls. By about the fourth day, I had developed a sort of skin rash that itched so bad, I couldn’t sleep for two straight nights. I finally got some relief after going to an emergency on-call doctor to get  a shot of Cortisone . . . in the bum. The diagnosis was Solar Dermatitis, a reaction to the sun that could have been caused by any number of catalysts: preservatives in food, an ingredient in sunscreen, or just simply being in a tropical location “closer” to the sun than I was used to back in Sacramento.

The whole thing repeated itself about 10 years later when I revisited Maui with my then-boyfriend and his family. Not exactly the kind of impression I had planned on making.

SO, this leads us to the Photo A Day, compliments of Kris B. and her skin cancer dog Joe! This nifty sun suit is specifically designed for dogs with sensitivity to the sun. The Designer Dogwear website claims the suit is “made of a UV resistant fabric (that) will help reduce the chance of your dog developing skin cancer.” According to Kris, Joe didn’t even fuss too much when she put it on him. Think I can get one of these in a size 6?

I bought a suit like that and it works just fine . . . the drawback is two extra legs. I just tuck those into the waistband. That is a cool dog. I bet his owner is a cool dude too.
